Ahmadu Bello University to Honour Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale Al-Hussain at 44th Convocation Ceremony

The decision to honour these two remarkable figures was made during the 544th Senate meeting on 7th January 2025. The University’s Governing Council officially approved the recommendation the following day, 8th January 2025. Both recipients have graciously accepted the honour.

- Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will be awarded a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) Honoris Causa for her unparalleled leadership in global finance and international development. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has worked with the World Bank and held pivotal positions in Nigeria, including two terms as the country’s Minister of Finance. Notably, she played a key role in negotiating Nigeria’s debt relief and implementing essential public financial management reforms.
- Sheikh Sharif Ibrahim Sale Al-Hussain will receive a Doctor of Laws (LL.D) Honoris Causa for his exceptional contributions to Islamic scholarship. A respected figure from Borno State, Sheikh Sharif has authored over 500 books, focusing on Islamic philosophy, jurisprudence, and Qur’anic sciences. His expertise has earned him global recognition, and he has represented Nigeria in international religious dialogues.
