Leadership Changes at Nnamdi Azikiwe University: What You Need to Know

In a major shake-up at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), significant leadership changes have been made, following instructions from the Honourable Minister of Education and approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Reinstatement of Acting Vice-Chancellor

Prof. Joseph I. Ikechebelu has been reinstated as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK, effective immediately. This decision overturns the previous appointment of Prof. Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh as the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.

The Federal Ministry of Education made this announcement in a letter dated November 20, 2024, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo. The letter clarified that the 10th Governing Council’s appointment of Prof. Odoh was deemed illegal, leading to the reinstatement of Prof. Ikechebelu.

As the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ikechebelu is now responsible for the full administration of the university. Any matters that require the approval of the Governing Council will now be referred to the Honourable Minister of Education until a new council is appointed.

Reinstatement of Acting Registrar

In another significant move, Mr. Victor Ikechukwu Modebelu has been reinstated as the Acting Registrar of UNIZIK. This decision also follows the nullification of the appointment of Barr. Mrs. Rosemary Ifeoma Nwokike, whose appointment as the substantive Registrar was declared illegal by the dissolved 10th Governing Council.

Call for Cooperation and Support

Both Prof. Ikechebelu and Mr. Modebelu have been urged to lead with dedication as the university strives to meet its academic and administrative goals. The university community and the general public are encouraged to offer their full support to the newly reinstated leaders to ensure that the institution operates in line with legal and ethical standards.

These leadership changes reflect the commitment to upholding the integrity and standards of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and its operations.
