House of Reps Approves Four New Federal Universities Across Nigeria

In a major move to expand access to higher education, the House of Representatives has approved the establishment of four new federal universities in key regions across Nigeria. The approval came during Tuesday’s plenary session, reflecting the lawmakers’ commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s academic and research landscape.

The new universities will be located in Borno, Imo, Kaduna, and Kano States. This decision followed the adoption of a report presented by Rep. Abubakar Fulata (APC–Jigawa), Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, after deliberating on four education-related bills.

Details of the Newly Approved Universities

The House passed the following bills to formalize the creation and conversion of existing institutions:

  1. Federal University of Technology, Kaduna – This replaces the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, with a focus on applied science, innovation, and technology-driven education.
  2. Federal University, Biu, Borno State – This institution replaces the Nigerian Army University, Biu (Act 2020), transforming it into a federal university for broader academic access.
  3. Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, Imo State – Formerly a college of education, this upgrade will deepen teacher education and professional training.
  4. Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano State – A new university designed to advance teacher preparation and educational research in the northern region.

According to Rep. Fulata, the goal is to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, particularly in science, technology, and education. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s long-term goal of improving the quality of tertiary education and bridging educational gaps across regions.

What Happens Next

Following the adoption of the committee’s report, the House directed that all four bills be transmitted to the Senate for concurrence. Once approved by the Senate, the bills will be forwarded to the President for assent before they officially become law.

Rep. Fulata further noted that these new institutions will not only enhance teaching and research but also create new opportunities for academic administration, professional development, and regional economic growth.

Why This Matters

This approval represents a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing effort to strengthen its higher education system. By expanding the number of federal universities, the government aims to increase student enrollment capacity, create new academic jobs, and support national development through skilled manpower training.

Once the Senate and the President give final approval, these four universities will serve as catalysts for educational and socioeconomic growth in their respective states.
