AFUED Set to Graduate 18,825 Students in First Convocation Since Becoming a University
From College to University: Adeyemi Federal University of Education Celebrates a Major Milestone With a Packed Convocation Week
In a historic milestone, Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, will host its first-ever convocation ceremony as a full-fledged university on Friday, May 23. A total of 18,825 students will be awarded degrees, certificates, and diplomas—marking a major turning point in the institution’s academic journey.
The event is the first of its kind since AFUED transitioned from a college to a university, and it covers six academic sessions from 2017 to 2023.
First Convocation as a University: A New Chapter Begins
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, May 19, Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Samuel Akintunde described the upcoming convocation as “more than a ceremony—it’s a new beginning.”
“This marks real progress,” he said. “We’re celebrating the success of our students and showing how far we’ve come as a university.”
What’s Happening During Convocation Week?
Convocation week runs from May 19 to May 23, and it’s not just about speeches and certificates. The schedule is designed to foster community spirit and celebrate growth:
- Faculty Debates that test intellectual strength
- Alumni Football Matches to promote old-school camaraderie
- Reunion Night at the University Quadrangle (Friday, 5 p.m.)
- Alumni Convention in the Alumni Hall (Friday, 10 a.m.)
Convocation Lecture & High-Profile Honours
One of the key highlights is the convocation lecture on Thursday, May 22, to be delivered by renowned scholar Prof. Toyin Falola of the University of Texas, Austin. His topic, “The Advent of Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Nigeria Tertiary Education,” will focus on how technology is reshaping learning.
Later that day, a stage play will be performed at 4 p.m. to entertain and educate attendees.
During the main event, three distinguished Nigerians will receive Honorary Doctorate Degrees:
- Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady
- Oba Victor Adesimbo Kiladejo, Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom
- Prof. Toyin Falola, guest lecturer
Projects That Show Progress
Prof. Akintunde also used the occasion to outline key developments achieved since 2018, including:
- Renovated student hostels (Oduduwa, Olunloyo, Tinubu, Wande Abimbola)
- Construction of a new Library, Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Education, and CBT Centre
- Upgraded roads, solar-powered lighting, and modern office blocks
- Improved ICT services and campus security
- Better welfare and academic support for students and staff
“Some may see these as basic upgrades, but they are the foundation of a functional and future-ready university,” Prof. Akintunde noted.
Planning for the Future
Looking ahead, the university says its focus remains firmly on teacher education and research excellence.
“We’re not stopping now. The foundation is strong, and we’ll keep building,” said the Vice Chancellor.
He thanked the Federal Government for granting the institution university status and highlighted the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund), which has approved ₦68.3 million for 995 students who applied for support.
