Kwara State University (KWASU) Suspends Law Admissions for 2025/2026 Session After Legal Education Council Ruling

Kwara State University (KWASU) in Malete has officially confirmed the suspension of Law programme admissions for the upcoming 2025/2026 academic session, following a decision by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). This suspension is in line with a ruling from the Council for Legal Education (CLE) over the university’s process for launching its Law programmes.

Why Was the Suspension Imposed?

KWASU began offering Law degrees in 2018 after receiving approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC). However, it did so without first obtaining clearance from the Council for Legal Education (CLE), the body responsible for regulating legal education in Nigeria. The CLE’s recent ruling has led to JAMB’s enforcement of a one-year ban on new Law admissions at KWASU for the 2025/2026 session.

KWASU’s Current Accreditation Status

Despite the suspension of Law admissions, KWASU is fully accredited by both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Council for Legal Education (CLE). The university offers two Law programmes:

  • Common Law
  • Common and Islamic Law

Impact on Current Law Students

The suspension only affects new students applying for Law programmes in the 2025/2026 session. Existing students currently enrolled in the Faculty of Law at KWASU will continue their studies without any disruption.

KWASU’s Response

In response to the suspension, KWASU has expressed its respect for the decision of the Council for Legal Education. The university has confirmed that it will not offer admissions for Law programmes in the 2025/2026 academic year. However, KWASU reassured prospective students that all other academic programmes at the university remain fully accredited and open for admission.

Conclusion

This development marks a significant moment for KWASU and its Law Faculty, but the suspension only affects future applicants, with current students unaffected. The university remains committed to offering quality education in other fields, and prospective students are encouraged to explore the wide range of accredited courses available.
