After the 1979general elections, the results went as follows.a) The National Party of Nigeria (NPN) came first.That is the party took the first position.b) The Unity party of Nigeria (UPN) took the secondposition.c) The Nigeria people's party (NPP) took the thirdposition.d) Great Nigeria people's party (GNPP) took thefourth position and then.e) Thepeoples redemption party (PRP) took the last and fifth position.The Nigeria Advance party (NAP) could not take part in theelection as it had not been recognized officially.Following the result of then elections, the national partyof Nigeria became the ruling party at the federal level. It then ruled from 1stof October 1979 tO 31sl December, 1983.The Nigeria people's party (NPP) went into working agreement with (NPN)and this was known as an accord. It should then be noted that this accord brokedown after about two years. The unity party of Nigeria (UPU) acted as a wayvery strong check on the ruling party by criticizing some of its policies, eventhough there was no provision for official opposition in the presidentialsystem.
