NUC Charges the varsity councils for service delivery

The National Universities Commission (NUC) recently held a significant retreat for the newly inaugurated Governing Councils of 51 federal universities in Nigeria. The Acting Executive Secretary, Mr. Chris J. Maiyaki, emphasized the critical role these councils play in enhancing service delivery and improving the overall fortunes of their institutions.

A Call to Action

In his keynote address, Maiyaki urged the councils to leverage their diverse experiences and backgrounds to foster positive changes within their universities. He highlighted that their appointments were part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at revitalizing the higher education sector in Nigeria. The NUC’s commitment to quality education and governance was underscored, with Maiyaki stressing the importance of effective resource allocation and management.

Addressing Challenges in University Ceremonies

One of the pressing concerns raised during the retreat was the decline in the quality of ceremonial events at universities, such as matriculations and convocations. Maiyaki expressed his disappointment over the diminishing standards of these significant occasions, which traditionally showcase the prestige of academic institutions. He announced plans for the NUC to collaborate with stakeholders to establish minimum guidelines for conducting such ceremonies, ensuring they regain their former glory.

Governance and Financial Management

The retreat also featured discussions on governance structures within universities. Experts, including Mr. Chiadiadighi Ogu from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, highlighted the importance of sound financial management practices. He warned that lapses in governance could lead to financial infractions, ultimately costing the government and the institutions significantly. The message was clear: effective management is crucial for the sustainability and growth of Nigerian universities.

Support from the Academic Community

The Chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, Professor Lilian Salami, extended her support to the newly inaugurated councils, emphasizing the collaborative effort needed to achieve success. This partnership is vital as universities navigate the complexities of modern education and strive to meet national and global standards.

Conclusion

As Nigerian universities face various challenges, the NUC’s proactive approach in empowering governing councils is a positive step towards enhancing service delivery and academic excellence. With the right leadership and commitment, these institutions can not only recover their prestige but also play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education in Nigeria. The call to action from the NUC is a reminder of the importance of collaboration, governance, and dedication in the pursuit of quality education.
