Lagos State University Launches Four New Technology-Focused Undergraduate Programmes

Lagos State University (LASU) has officially received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer four new full-time undergraduate programmes in the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, starting in the 2025/2026 academic session. This move expands opportunities for students interested in technology and supports the growing demand for skilled professionals in Nigeria’s digital economy.

NUC Approval and Verification Process

The approval, confirmed in a letter dated 3rd November 2025, was signed by Mr. Abubakar M. Girei, Acting Director of Academic Planning, on behalf of the NUC Executive Secretary.

The sanction followed a resource verification visit by NUC experts, who assessed LASU’s capacity to run the programmes, including:

  • Academic staff qualifications
  • Adequate classrooms and laboratories
  • Learning materials and equipment

At this stage, the approval applies only to full-time study. Part-time or alternative study modes will require separate NUC authorization.

New Computing and IT Programmes at LASU

From the 2025/2026 session, LASU will offer the following four full-time undergraduate programmes:

  1. B.Sc. Cyber Security – Training students to protect networks, systems, and data from cyber threats.
  2. B.Sc. Software Engineering – Focusing on designing and building practical software solutions for organisations.
  3. B.Sc. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) – Covering computer systems, networks, and digital communication tools.
  4. B.Sc. Data Science – Teaching data collection, analysis, and interpretation to support informed decision-making.

These programmes are designed to equip students with in-demand skills that align with current industry needs, both in Nigeria and internationally.

What This Means for Students

The NUC approval provides LASU students with more specialized paths in computing, moving beyond general computer science. Benefits include:

  • Clear and focused course options in technology fields
  • Skills that match employer demands in the digital economy
  • Opportunities for further study and research in specialised IT areas

Families and guardians can also be assured that these programmes meet national quality standards for Nigerian universities.

Study Mode and Start Date

  • Mode: Full-time undergraduate only
  • Start: 2025/2026 academic session
  • Any changes in mode (part-time or online) will need new NUC approval.

Prospective students should watch for official LASU admissions announcements to apply for these programmes.

LASU’s Commitment to Technology Education

By introducing these new computing and IT programmes, LASU reinforces its focus on technology-driven education. The university is preparing graduates to meet the needs of Nigeria’s digital economy and to contribute meaningfully to global technology sectors.
