FG Ends BEA Foreign Scholarships to Boost Nigerian Universities — What Students Need to Know
In a major shift in education policy, the Federal Government has officially ended the Bilateral Education Agreement (BEA) Scholarship Programme. This decision was announced by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, during a press briefing in Abuja.
The move comes after a thorough review of Nigeria’s education funding strategy and signals a renewed focus on strengthening local universities and polytechnics. According to Dr. Alausa, Nigeria now offers nearly every academic course previously sought abroad—many of which are delivered at a comparable or even higher standard.
“There’s no longer any justification for spending public funds on foreign scholarships when our own institutions offer world-class training,” he said.
Why the BEA Scholarship Was Cancelled
Running the BEA scholarship cost the government millions annually. Expenses covered by the programme included:
- International airfare
- Foreign tuition fees
- Monthly living stipends
- Healthcare
- Accommodation and other living expenses
By ending the scheme, these funds will now be redirected toward developing the home front—upgrading facilities, paying academic staff, increasing student admissions, and improving the overall quality of tertiary education in Nigeria.
What This Means for Nigerian Students
The termination of the BEA programme does not affect students who are already on the scholarship. They will continue to receive full government support until they graduate.
Additionally, several domestic scholarship and bursary programmes remain active:
- Nigerian Scholarship Awards – For undergraduates in public institutions
- Federal Government Bursary Scheme – For students studying education
- Presidential Scholarship Programme – For outstanding former NYSC corps members
The Nigerian Student Loan Programme is also expanding, offering interest-free loans to students enrolled in Nigerian universities and polytechnics.
Are Any Foreign Scholarships Still Available?
Yes—but only under strict conditions. The government will still support fully funded scholarships offered by foreign governments, provided they cover:
- Full tuition
- Housing
- Transport
- A monthly allowance of at least \$500
- Medical insurance
- No cost whatsoever to Nigeria
This ensures that Nigerians still have access to international opportunities—without placing any financial burden on the federal budget.
The Bigger Picture: Building Nigerian Education
The government’s new policy aims to invest more in Nigerian institutions and give more students access to quality education locally.
For JAMB candidates and current students, this is a signal to look inward: Nigerian universities and polytechnics are being positioned to provide world-class education.
If you’re planning your next step in education, the message from the government is clear: There is strong support for students who study right here at home.
