AKSU Gets NUC Approval to Launch Faculty of Law for 2025/2026 Session

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has received a major academic boost as the National Universities Commission (NUC) has formally approved the establishment of a Faculty of Law, marking a significant milestone in the university’s ongoing expansion drive.

The approval, issued in a letter dated November 10, 2025, grants AKSU the right to commence a full-time Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme beginning from the 2025/2026 academic session. The programme will run exclusively at the main campus, according to the NUC’s directive.

Why This Approval Matters

Before granting the approval, the NUC carried out a detailed resource verification at AKSU’s main campus. The visiting panel evaluated:

  • Staffing strength
  • Physical facilities
  • Lecture halls and classrooms
  • Availability of academic materials and resources

The commission concluded that AKSU has met the minimum requirements to begin a Law programme. However, it also emphasized that the university must continuously maintain and upgrade its staff quality, learning resources, and facilities in line with Nigeria’s Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).

Inside AKSU’s New Faculty of Law

The newly approved Faculty of Law will begin with three foundational departments, each covering key areas of legal education:

  1. Private and Property Law
Focuses on property rights, family law, and interpersonal legal relationships.
  2. Jurisprudence and International Law
Covers legal theories, global legal systems, and international relations.
  3. Commercial and Industrial Law
Handles business law, labour law, trade regulations, and industrial relations.

A Period of Rapid Growth Under Acting Vice-Chancellor

The approval comes during a remarkably productive period for Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor OtoAbasi E. Akpan, who has led major academic reforms within just three months. Under his administration, AKSU has achieved:

  • Creation of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies with six departments
  • Establishment of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology with five departments
  • Successful resource checks and accreditation of over 30 postgraduate programmes and several undergraduate programmes
  • Establishment of more than 30 research centres and institutes to boost research, innovation, and funding

What This Means for Students

The launch of the Faculty of Law opens a new, accessible pathway for students interested in studying Law within Akwa Ibom State. It also reinforces AKSU’s commitment to improving academic standards and expanding opportunities for young scholars.

The university management expressed gratitude to the NUC for its continuous support and reaffirmed its pledge to maintain high standards in teaching, research, and community service.

A New Chapter for AKSU

The establishment of the Faculty of Law signals another step forward in AKSU’s mission to create diverse and quality learning paths for students. As the 2025/2026 session approaches, the university stands positioned for even greater academic growth and national relevance.
