NUC Approves Imo State’s University of Innovation, Science and Technology
In a landmark development for Nigeria’s higher education sector, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted approval to the Imo State Government to commence operations at the newly established University of Innovation, Science and Technology (UIST), Omuma, in Oru East Local Government Area.
The approval, presented by the NUC’s Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, marks a major stride in expanding educational access and empowering young Nigerians through knowledge-driven and skill-based learning.
NUC Issues Operational Licence to Imo State
During an official ceremony in Abuja, Professor Ribadu formally handed over the operational licence and certificate of recognition to the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma.
With this milestone, UIST becomes Nigeria’s 301st university and the 70th state-owned institution. Imo State now proudly hosts eight universities — four state-owned, two federal, and two private.
Professor Ribadu described the university’s establishment as a “strategic move to promote education, research, and workforce development across Imo State.” He urged all stakeholders to uphold academic integrity, good governance, and quality assurance.
“Our shared goal,” Ribadu noted, “is to make this new university a true centre of learning and character development. The NUC will continue to guide and monitor its growth.”
He also confirmed that the NUC will soon conduct a resource verification visit to assess infrastructure, staffing, and governance systems before the university begins full academic operations.
To ensure seamless integration, the NUC has notified JAMB, TETFund, NELFUND, and the NYSC to include the new institution in their respective programmes and funding frameworks.
Governor Uzodimma: A Vision for Youth Empowerment
Governor Hope Uzodimma expressed gratitude to the NUC, emphasizing that the new university reflects his administration’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and preparing young people for a technology-driven future.
He revealed that the University of California, Berkeley will serve as a mentorship partner through the Imo Digital City Initiative, equipping students with hands-on digital and entrepreneurial skills.
“This university is a response to the dreams of our young people,” Uzodimma said. “It will empower them with digital literacy and innovation-driven education to help them create jobs and shape the economy.”
While acknowledging funding challenges, the governor reaffirmed his resolve to prioritize education as a tool for youth engagement, job creation, and the reduction of social vices.
Building the Future of Education in Imo State
The approval of the University of Innovation, Science and Technology, Omuma, represents more than just a new institution — it’s a promise of transformation. It reinforces Nigeria’s ongoing mission to strengthen its knowledge economy, promote digital advancement, and prepare a new generation of innovators.
With this approval, Imo State solidifies its reputation as an emerging hub for education, innovation, and youth empowerment in the South-East and across Nigeria.
