UNILAG Launches Nigeria’s First Digital IP and Patent Registry with ITMO Chatbot

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has once again set a national record by launching Nigeria’s first digitised Intellectual Property (IP) and Patent Registry, a revolutionary step that places the institution at the forefront of research management and digital innovation in higher education.

The new platform, known as the ITMO Chatbot, is designed to streamline how staff and students access intellectual property resources, file patents, and engage with innovation-related services across the university.

Available at itmobot.unilag.edu.ng, the chatbot provides a seamless, user-friendly interface offering comprehensive information on IP forms, innovation hubs, patent application steps, and UNILAG’s technology management systems.

About the UNILAG ITMO Chatbot

Developed by the Innovation and Technology Management Office (ITMO) under the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), the chatbot represents a major milestone in advancing intellectual property management in Nigerian academia.

Through this platform, UNILAG staff and students can:

  • Learn about patent application procedures
  • Explore licensing and technology transfer opportunities
  • Access information on innovation resources and research support services

This innovation not only simplifies complex patent processes but also promotes knowledge-sharing and research commercialisation across the university community.

Backed by Global Partnership

The ITMO Chatbot project is supported by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) through the Technology Transform Grant Team. This collaboration underscores UNILAG’s growing global influence in research commercialisation, intellectual property protection, and technology transfer within the African academic landscape.

By integrating global best practices into its research framework, UNILAG continues to build an ecosystem that supports creativity, fosters entrepreneurship, and connects local innovations to international markets.

Leading the Way in Academic Innovation

For decades, the University of Lagos has maintained a reputation as one of Africa’s most forward-thinking universities — a hub for research excellence and technological development.

With the launch of this digitised IP and Patent Registry, UNILAG reinforces its leadership in driving digital transformation, innovation governance, and intellectual property awareness across Nigeria’s higher education sector.

A Vision for a Smarter, More Connected Future

The ITMO Chatbot marks a bold step toward a more efficient, transparent, and tech-driven research environment. Students and researchers can now protect their creative works, access credible IP information instantly, and collaborate more effectively with global partners.

As UNILAG continues to expand its digital footprint, this innovation aligns perfectly with the university’s broader vision — to build a smarter, more connected academic environment where ideas thrive and innovations flourish.
