NOA Reminds Nigerians: “Sing It Right, Say It Right” — New Rules for the National Anthem and Pledge
In a renewed call for national consciousness, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to follow the official procedure when singing or reciting the National Anthem and National Pledge at all public and state events.
The agency emphasized that respecting these national symbols is more than tradition — it’s a reflection of unity, discipline, and patriotism.
Official Guidelines for the National Anthem and Pledge
According to the NOA, the proper order and usage of the National Anthem and Pledge are as follows:
- First stanza only — to be sung or recited at all official events.
- Third stanza — to serve as the National Prayer at the beginning of an event.
- All three stanzas — to be sung only on special national occasions such as:
- Independence Day
- Presidential Inauguration (Swearing-in)
- Armed Forces Remembrance Day
- Democracy Day (June 12)
- Inauguration of the National Assembly, and other major state ceremonies.
- National Pledge — to be recited at the end of an event.
These guidelines, the agency noted, help maintain decorum, honour, and uniformity in how Nigerians express their national pride.
Common Mistakes Nigerians Make While Singing the Anthem
The NOA also drew attention to a few recurring errors often made during the anthem’s rendition. Below are the correct versions:
| Wrong Version | Correct Version |
|---|---|
| Tribe | Tribes |
| Tongue | Tongues |
| Nigerians all, and | Nigerians all, are |
| Nigeria shall be blessed | Nigeria may be blessed |
The agency explained that learning and using the correct lyrics strengthens national identity and reinforces a sense of belonging among citizens.
The Full Lyrics of the Nigerian National Anthem
Stanza 1
Nigeria, we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribes and tongues may differ,
In brotherhood we stand.
Nigerians all, are proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.
Stanza 2
Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
Stanza 3
O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request:
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
Why Proper Rendition Matters
The NOA emphasized that singing the anthem correctly is a civic responsibility. It goes beyond melody — it represents Nigeria’s unity, hope, and collective purpose.
Every citizen, from school pupils to public officials, plays a role in preserving the dignity and respect the anthem commands. Proper rendition not only promotes patriotism but also helps future generations understand the values embedded in the nation’s identity.
