PLASU Denies Tuition Fee Hike for 2025/2026 Session, Clarifies ICT and Bench Charges
he management of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, has officially dismissed claims circulating on social media about an alleged increase in tuition fees for the 2025/2026 academic session.
In a clear statement released through an internal memorandum signed by the Registrar, Yakubu F. Ayuba, the university reaffirmed that tuition fees for both new and returning students have remained unchanged since 2022.
According to the memo, PLASU has deliberately maintained its existing fee structure despite the country’s ongoing economic challenges and inflation, as part of efforts to reduce financial stress on students and parents.
Why Students Thought Fees Increased
The university clarified that the misunderstanding likely arose from the introduction of a ₦5,000 ICT charge, recently approved by the Governing Council. This new fee, the school emphasized, is not part of tuition.
Instead, it was introduced to enhance campus-wide ICT services, including free internet access for students and staff. The university described the ICT charge as an “infrastructure-support fee” aimed at improving digital learning and research accessibility across the institution.
Bench Fee Remains the Same
The memo further explained that the ₦10,000 Bench Fee, which was introduced in 2021 to replace inconsistent departmental levies, remains unchanged. Initially charged only to final-year students, the Bench Fee now applies to students in 22 departments whose programmes involve fieldwork, excursions, productions, and other outdoor learning activities.
Students Encouraged to Use NELFUND Loan
PLASU also reminded students of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) recently introduced by the Federal Government. The university encouraged eligible students to take advantage of the scheme to ease payment of tuition and related charges.
“Our goal is to ensure that no student is denied education due to financial hardship,” the memo emphasized.
With this clarification, PLASU urges students and the public to disregard misinformation circulating online and to rely only on official communication channels for verified updates.
