LASU Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies Opens Admission for 2025/2026 Academic Session

The Lagos State University Centre for Afro-Brazilian Studies (LASUCAS) has officially opened applications for admission into its specialized programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The centre, which serves as a bridge between Nigeria, Brazil, and other Lusophone countries, is inviting students to enroll in programmes designed to promote cultural exchange, academic development, and international opportunities.


Programmes on Offer

1. CELPE-Bras Training Programme (Scholarship Pathway to Brazil)

The CELPE-Bras programme prepares candidates for the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese Language for Foreigners, a mandatory requirement for Nigerian students seeking scholarships in Brazil.

  • Scholarship Opportunity: The Government of Brazil awards scholarships in multiple disciplines to Nigerian students each year.
  • Eligibility:
    • WAEC/SSCE with at least five (5) credits
    • Age 17–23 for undergraduate scholarships
    • Minimum of Second Class Honours (Lower Division) for postgraduate scholarships
  • Duration: Six (6) months

2. Diploma in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

This diploma qualifies candidates for direct entry into LASU’s degree programme in Portuguese/English.

  • Eligibility:
    • Minimum of four (4) credits, including English, in GCE O-Level/SSCE at not more than two sittings
    • OR three (3) credits at one sitting plus five (5) years work experience
    • Mature candidates (35 years and above) with three (3) credits at one sitting
  • Duration: Four (4) semesters, part-time (two academic sessions)

3. Certificate in Portuguese and Brazilian Studies

Ideal for students, professionals, and travelers heading to Portuguese-speaking countries for study, business, or tourism.

  • Eligibility:
    • Three (3) O-Level credits including English at not more than two sittings
    • OR three (3) credits at one sitting plus five (5) years work experience
  • Duration: Six (6) months, part-time (two modules of three months each)

4. Proficiency Certificate in Yoruba (For Non-Native Speakers)

This unique programme is tailored for Brazilians, other international learners, and Nigerians who wish to master Yoruba language, culture, and literature.

  • Eligibility:
    • Foreign applicants with a secondary school certificate or equivalent
    • Nigerian candidates with a minimum of three (3) O-Level credits
    • Graduates of higher institutions (any discipline)
    • Mature candidates above 35 years or professionals with 10+ years’ experience may also apply
  • Duration: Eight (8) weeks, full-time
