FULAFIA Issues New Rules for Final-Year Students’ Signing-Out Celebration
Relief, Joy, and Now… Rules
For every graduating student, there’s nothing quite like finishing the final exam. The relief, the joy, and the tradition of scribbling names and farewell messages on shirts. At the Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA), however, that tradition has just been reshaped — not banned, but carefully guided with a set of official rules.
Why FULAFIA Introduced the Policy
The signing-out culture has always been a symbol of freedom and excitement for final-year students. But over the years, it has also sparked issues — from rowdy behavior and property damage to accidents and clashes with staff.
To strike a balance between fun and discipline, FULAFIA has rolled out a new policy. Instead of banning the signing-out celebration outright, the school has provided a structured guide that allows students to celebrate safely, respectfully, and meaningfully.
The Aims in Simple Terms
According to the university management, the new rules are designed to:
- Maintain peace and discipline on campus.
- Protect the school’s image and reputation.
- Reduce accidents and rowdy behavior.
- Safeguard students, staff, and nearby residents.
- Create a meaningful tradition for future graduates.
Who the Rules Cover
The policy applies to all final-year students across departments, faculties, and associations. Supervising staff members are also directly involved in monitoring the celebration.
How the Celebration Will Now Happen
Under the new guidelines, here’s what the signing-out day will look like:
- Celebration begins immediately after the last exam.
- Each department organizes the event, overseen by the Head of Department (HOD) or a representative.
- Duration: 1 hour to 90 minutes maximum.
- The event will follow four sessions:
- Opening prayer
- Speeches (by students, mentors, or invited guests)
- Signing-out ceremony
- Refreshments
A new feature has also been introduced — a signing-out register. Students will record their details (name, matriculation number, state, contact info, and more). The original copy will be stored in the Alumni office, while students get copies for keepsake.
What’s Strictly Not Allowed
FULAFIA has placed a strong ban on certain activities:
- No writing or signing on shirts.
- No alcohol.
- No smoking.
- No loud music.
- No reckless driving or “cruise rides” around campus.
Food and photos are allowed — but only during the refreshment session.
Final Note from the School
The university emphasized that the rules are flexible and may be improved later, with input from the Student Union. However, anyone caught breaking the rules will face disciplinary action as stated in the student handbook.
FULAFIA’s new approach may feel less “wild” than the old shirt-signing culture, but the school insists it offers something deeper — a chance to celebrate with dignity, gratitude, and lasting memories.
