UNICROSS Gets New Vice Chancellor as Gov. Otu Confirms Prof. Francisca Bassey’s Appointment
In a bold move to reshape academic leadership in Cross River State, Governor Bassey Otu has officially confirmed the appointment of Professor Francisca Bassey as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS).
The appointment was announced in an official statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Anthony Owan-Enoh, a former Vice Chancellor of the same institution. According to the statement, Prof. Bassey’s appointment takes immediate effect, based on the strong recommendation of the university’s Governing Council.
From Acting VC to Confirmed Leader
Professor Francisca Bassey has been serving in an acting capacity since the suspension of her predecessor, Professor Austin Angba, over allegations of misconduct. Although Angba later won his case in court, he voluntarily resigned, paving the way for a fresh start in the university’s top leadership.
Governor Otu, acting in his role as Visitor to the university, has now elevated Bassey to the position of full-time Vice Chancellor — a decision that many in the academic community view as both strategic and timely.
A Leader Backed by Experience and Integrity
Professor Owan-Enoh praised the new VC’s impressive academic record and unwavering integrity. “She brings both integrity and deep commitment to the table,” he stated, highlighting her years of experience in teaching, administration, and leadership within Nigeria’s higher education sector.
He also emphasized that her selection reflects the government’s commitment to empowering qualified Cross River indigenes who can bring lasting improvements to public institutions.
Governor Otu’s Charge to the New VC
Governor Otu congratulated Professor Bassey and charged her with the task of steering UNICROSS into a new era of academic excellence. He urged her to “lead with purpose” and transform the institution into a beacon of quality education and meaningful progress.
What This Means for Students and the University
With this appointment, students, staff, and stakeholders can look forward to a more stable and visionary administration at UNICROSS. Professor Bassey is expected to champion reforms, improve academic programs, and position the university as one of Nigeria’s leading state-owned institutions.
