FG Declares June 12 Public Holiday to Celebrate Democracy Day: What It Means for Nigerians
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, June 12, 2025, a public holiday in celebration of Democracy Day, a significant moment in Nigeria’s political history.
The announcement was made on Sunday, June 8, through an official statement from the Ministry of Interior. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, confirmed the declaration on behalf of the government.
“June 12 is more than just a date – it’s a powerful symbol of justice, truth, and the enduring spirit of Nigerians,” the Minister said.
???????? 26 Years of Civilian Rule – No Turning Back
Dr. Tunji-Ojo congratulated all Nigerians, emphasizing that the country has now enjoyed 26 consecutive years of uninterrupted democratic governance. This marks a milestone with no military interference since 1999 – a historic achievement in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
He reminded the public that June 12 represents the struggles of the past, the progress of the present, and the promise of the future.
Why June 12 Matters
Originally known for the 1993 presidential election, which many believed was the fairest in Nigeria’s history, June 12 has become a national symbol of hope, resilience, and the people’s will.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo described Democracy Day as a tribute to those who fought for a free and fair Nigeria — and a call for continued commitment to national unity and development.
Democracy Must Deliver
Highlighting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision, the Minister said the current administration is determined to build a system where the voice of the people guides leadership — politically, socially, and economically.
“Democracy thrives when it grows, evolves, and empowers its people. Nigeria is on that path,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo assured.
What This Means for You
For students, workers, and businesses, June 12 is a day to reflect on the importance of civic participation. Whether it’s by voting, holding leaders accountable, or simply understanding your rights — Democracy Day is a reminder that you are part of Nigeria’s progress.
So, as you enjoy the public holiday, take a moment to appreciate how far the country has come — and how much more can be achieved when citizens and government work together.
SHARE this post to remind fellow Nigerians about the importance of June 12.
