TETFund Suspends Foreign Scholarship Programme for Academic Staff Starting in 2025
In a major policy shift, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced the suspension of its foreign scholarship programme for academic staff, effective January 1, 2025.
The decision, approved by the Board of Trustees, comes in response to rising costs of foreign training and an increasing number of scholars failing to return to Nigeria after completing their studies abroad. According to a circular signed by the Executive Secretary, Arch. Sonny S. T. Echono, the move is aimed at strengthening local education and promoting capacity-building within Nigeria.
TETFund’s new strategy seeks to reduce the country’s reliance on foreign exchange by focusing on improving resources and training within Nigerian institutions. This will allow academic staff to continue their professional development through locally-based programmes, ensuring that investments in education stay within the country.
However, scholars who are currently studying abroad under the programme will continue to receive funding until they complete their studies. TETFund has assured that ongoing commitments will be fully honoured.
This adjustment marks a strategic shift in Nigeria’s education policy, prioritising the growth and development of the nation’s tertiary institutions. As the government focuses on boosting local capacity, academic staff will have more opportunities to enhance their skills right here in Nigeria.
