UNICROSS Postpones 24th Matriculation Indefinitely Over JAC Protest
The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has announced the indefinite postponement of its 24th matriculation ceremony, citing ongoing industrial unrest linked to a protest by the Joint Action Congress (JAC).
Why the ceremony was postponed
In an official circular No. 504 dated January 26, 2026, the university management explained that the decision followed the ongoing protest by JAC, an umbrella body representing the three non-teaching unions in the institution. The protest has disrupted normal activities, making it impossible to proceed with the ceremony as planned.
The circular was signed by the University Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) Catherine Ndifon Osai.
Original dates and venues
Before the postponement, UNICROSS had scheduled the 24th matriculation across its campuses as follows:
- Thursday, January 29, 2026 — Calabar Campus
- Friday, January 30, 2026 — Ogoja and Okuku Campuses
All these dates have now been put on hold.
Who the notice affects
The university clarified that the postponement applies to:
- All staff
- Fresh students admitted for the 2025/2026 academic session
- Members of the general public
What the circular says
An excerpt from the notice reads:
“The postponement is sequel to the ongoing protest by the Joint Action Congress (JAC) of the three non-teaching Unions of the University. A new date will be communicated in due course.”
What fresh students should do
UNICROSS acknowledged that the sudden change may disrupt personal travel and preparation plans. Fresh students are advised to remain calm and await further official communication from the university management. According to the institution, a new matriculation date will be announced once the JAC protest is resolved.
Until then, students and stakeholders are encouraged to rely only on official UNICROSS channels for updates.
