British Council Launches Film Lab Africa 2026 for Emerging African Filmmakers
The British Council Film Lab Africa 2026 is now open for applications, inviting young African storytellers and filmmakers to develop their skills and showcase their stories globally.
Building on insights from its 2023–2024 pilot phase, this edition emphasizes Script Lab, focusing on scripted episodic content for screen and television. The programme aims to strengthen writing and production skills, encourage collaborations between Nigeria and the UK, and amplify African stories while promoting equitable growth in the creative sector.
Programme Structure
Film Lab Africa 2026 consists of six main phases:
- Scriptwriters’ Online Training – 30 selected scriptwriters participate in sessions on storytelling, character development, series formatting, pitching, and long-term practice.
- Writers’ Residency and Story Lab – 15 shortlisted writers attend a physical residency in Lagos or London, receiving guided writing support from Nigerian and UK mentors.
- Filmmakers’ Online Training – 60 directors and producers join sessions covering episodic production, pitching to broadcasters, inclusive storytelling, and climate-focused themes.
- Production and Grant Support – Selected filmmakers receive grants to produce pilot episodes, alongside mentorship and guidance on script development and funding.
- Showcasing and Distribution – Completed projects are presented locally and internationally through screenings, festivals, and market pitching.
- Industry Engagement and Advocacy – Participants engage in film clubs, creative hustles, and other activities to connect with the wider film industry.
Eligibility Criteria
- Aged 18–35 years
- Must have produced at least one web and one non-web project with credited work
- Must have a script ready for development and production
- Submission of a production bible is required
- Completion of the British Council e-learning programme prior to selection
