Federal University Lokoja Appoints Prof. Gbenga Ibileye as 4th Vice-Chancellor

Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has officially announced the appointment of Professor Gbenga Ibileye as its 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor, marking a new chapter in the institution’s leadership journey. His five-year tenure will commence on February 15, 2026.

A Transparent and Merit-Based Selection

The appointment was approved by the university’s 4th Governing Council, chaired by Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdallah, following what the council described as an open, transparent, and merit-driven selection process.

According to the council, eleven senior professors were shortlisted for the final stage of the exercise after successfully passing multiple screenings, statutory meetings, and assessments. These stages were conducted in line with current guidelines for the appointment of principal officers in Nigerian federal universities.

After an extensive interview and evaluation process, Professor Ibileye emerged top, recording a final score of 91.9, the highest among all candidates.

Transition From the Outgoing Vice-Chancellor

Professor Ibileye will take over from Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor has been widely commended by members of the university community.

Under Professor Akinwumi’s leadership, Federal University Lokoja witnessed steady improvements in academic standards, infrastructure development, programme expansion, staff and student welfare, campus harmony, and national recognition.

The Governing Council praised the outgoing Vice-Chancellor for his dedication and service, noting that his administration laid a strong foundation for future growth.

Council Commends Candidates, Reaffirms Commitment

In a statement, the Governing Council expressed appreciation to all candidates who participated in the exercise, commending their professionalism, discipline, and commitment throughout the process.

The council also reaffirmed its dedication to due process, transparency, and effective leadership, stressing that these principles guided every stage of the appointment.

As Federal University Lokoja prepares for a new era, the Governing Council expressed strong confidence in Professor Ibileye’s capacity to consolidate existing achievements and advance the university’s academic and developmental goals.

Members of the university community have also extended congratulations to the Visitor, Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, the Governing Council, management, staff, and students, describing the process as credible, fair, and well-coordinated.
