Explanation

One day, the Lord spoke to Jonah son of Amittai. He said, go to Nineveh, that great city, and speak out against it. I am aware how wicked its people are. Jonah set out in the opposite direction in order to get away from the Lord. Jonah did not want to go there with God's message, because he was convinced that God would not carry out his threat to destroy the city. After a series of dramatic events, he reluctantly obeyed, and finally sulked when his message of doom did not come true. This book portrays God's absolute sovereignty over his creation and God as a God of love and mercy. Jonah 1:1-17
