The medulla oblongata controls involuntary actions such as heart beat, peristalsis, rate of respiratory movements, contraction and dilation, of blood vessels. Thalamus distributes impulses transmitted to the brain by all sensory neurons. Olfactory lobes receive and interpret impulses from the nostrils thereby enabling us to perceive smell. Hypothalamus regulates body temperature and osmotic pressure of the blood. It also controls feelings like thirst, hunger, sex drive and anger.
