WAEC Rolls Out Tech and Entrepreneurship Subject Cluster for 2024 WASSCE
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has unveiled a new subject grouping titled “Technology and Entrepreneurship” that will be available to candidates for the upcoming 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
This specialized combination comprises compulsory subjects such as Data Processing, Technical Drawing, Entrepreneurship, and bookkeeping. Students can then select additional vocational electives like Auto Mechanics, Woodwork, and Catering Craft Practice.
The introduction of this cluster aims to inculcate technological skills and entrepreneurial acumen in students in line with national policies promoting technical and vocational education training (TVET). Authorities seek to produce more tech-savvy and self-employed graduates.
Schools offering the technology and entrepreneurship curriculum will require well-equipped facilities like workshops, studios, and computer labs for practical training. Teachers handling these subjects will also undergo specialized training programs.
While optional for the 2024 WASSCE diet, this subject grouping will become compulsory for all senior secondary schools nationwide from the 2025/2026 academic session.
Educational stakeholders have welcomed this move by WAEC as a timely curriculum realignment to match current realities and workplace demands in Nigeria and globally. Students taking this path are expected to acquire vital technological proficiencies and entrepreneurial capabilities.
The ultimate goal is to make graduating students more self-reliant and employable in today’s dynamic job market through demand-driven skill sets.
Registration is ongoing for the 2024 WASSCE scheduled to commence in August for school candidates across the country.
