UNN Suspends Student Union Government Over Crisis Allegations
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has announced the immediate suspension of all Student Union Government (SUG) activities on its Nsukka campus following rising tensions and media controversies linked to the union.
The decision was reached during an emergency management meeting held on Friday, September 26, 2025, where university authorities cited the need to maintain peace and order on campus.
Why UNN Took Action
In recent weeks, a series of media reports and counter-statements tied to the SUG sparked widespread concern. The allegations, though still under investigation, were considered weighty enough to threaten campus stability.
According to management, suspending union activities was the most responsible step to “steady the ship” and prevent further unrest while a full investigation is conducted.
What the Suspension Means for Students
With immediate effect, all meetings, gatherings, and events under the SUG banner are suspended until further notice.
To address the crisis, the Vice-Chancellor has set up a special committee tasked with investigating the allegations and submitting a report soon.
Meanwhile, the Dean of Student Affairs will temporarily take over responsibility for student welfare to ensure that no essential needs are neglected during the suspension.
UNN Calls for Calm
In a statement, the university administration appealed to students to remain calm, obey campus rules, and focus on their academics while the investigation unfolds.
“The university remains open, classes continue as scheduled, and students are urged to channel their energy into studies,” management emphasized, assuring that the matter will be handled swiftly and transparently.
What’s Next?
The outcome of the investigative committee is expected to shape the future of the SUG at UNN. Until then, patience is the university’s watchword as it seeks to maintain harmony and academic progress on campus.
