UNIZIK Grants Amnesty to Overstayed Students: Senate Approves Two-Year Academic Window
In a major relief for overstayed students, the Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has approved a special amnesty window for students who have exceeded the normal duration of their programmes. The decision, which applies to Regular, Continuing Education Programme (CEP), and Sandwich students, was reached during the university’s 238th Senate Meeting held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Zephaniah Mmadubuko Auditorium.
This development aims to give affected students a structured opportunity to complete their studies between the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sessions, in line with the institution’s renewed commitment to fairness and academic inclusiveness.
Key Highlights of the UNIZIK Amnesty Window
The Senate approved several critical guidelines to ensure a fair and effective implementation of the amnesty policy:
- Course Registration Limit:
Overstayed students can register outstanding courses up to a maximum of 72 credit hours, spread across four semesters, with not more than 24 credit hours per semester. - Grading Restriction:
During the amnesty period, no student will be allowed to score above a grade “C” in any course examination. - Outstanding Fees:
All pending financial obligations will be resolved administratively by the university management to ensure a smooth process. - Refresher Academic Support:
Eligible students will have access to refresher courses before examinations to help them prepare adequately and improve their performance. - Duration:
The approved amnesty covers a two-session window, spanning 2025/2026 to 2026/2027.
A Step Towards Academic Fairness
According to the Senate, this initiative reinforces UNIZIK’s commitment to academic justice and inclusivity. By offering overstayed students another chance to regularise their academic records, the university aims to uphold standards while ensuring no student is left behind.
Faculty members and departmental heads have been directed to fully support the implementation of the amnesty, ensuring that all eligible students can benefit without unnecessary bureaucracy.
A Second Chance for Overstayed Students
The UNIZIK Amnesty Window is more than a policy—it’s a second chance for students who have struggled with academic or administrative delays. The university urges all qualified students to take full advantage of this opportunity to complete their degree programmes successfully within the approved timeline.
