UNILAG Set to Celebrate 55th Convocation with Over 16,000 Graduates
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is gearing up for its landmark 55th Convocation Ceremonies, set to take place from January 13 to January 17, 2025, with a total of 16,409 students from undergraduate and postgraduate programs preparing to walk the stage.
In a press briefing on January 8, 2025, UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, shared details about the convocation, emphasizing the achievements of the graduating class and the exciting events scheduled for the week-long celebration.
Who’s Graduating?
The 55th convocation will celebrate students across various academic levels:
- Undergraduate and Diploma Degrees: 9,684 graduates
- Postgraduate Degrees: 6,659 students
- UNILAG Business School: 66 graduates
Academic Excellence Recognized
UNILAG is proud to highlight exceptional academic achievements. Damilare Adebakun and Samuel Badekale, both from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, stand out as the top overall graduates, earning a perfect 5.0 CGPA.
Meanwhile, Olamide Emida from the Department of Accounting earned the title of Best Graduate in the Humanities with an impressive 4.95 CGPA.
In postgraduate awards, Adetoun Akintoye received the Best PhD Thesis in the Sciences, while Eniola Ladipo claimed the award for the Best Thesis in the Humanities.
Key Highlights of the 55th Convocation
The week-long festivities will feature a series of exciting events, beginning with a Jumat Service on January 13. Highlights include:
- Exhibitions at the Senate Car Park, showcasing academic innovations.
- Project Commissions, including the Centre for Herbal Medicine and Drug Recovery, a 120-bed extension at Moremi Hall, and an Ultra-modern Learning Commons, designed to elevate the learning experience.
- Convocation Lecture by Dr. Tayo Aduloju, discussing “Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation,” chaired by former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola.
- Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new School of Postgraduate Studies building.
Graduation Schedule
Here’s what you can expect each day:
- January 14:
- Morning (9:00 am): Graduation for Faculties of Education and Social Sciences.
- Afternoon (1:00 pm): Graduation for Faculties of Arts, Environmental Sciences, and Science.
- January 15:
- Morning: Graduation for Faculties of Engineering, Law, and Management Sciences.
- Afternoon: Graduation for Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Pharmacy, and Distance Learning Institute.
- January 16:
- Postgraduate Graduation: Awarding of Postgraduate Diplomas, Master’s, and Doctorate Degrees.
- Honourary Degrees: Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Mr. Kola Adesina, and Mr. Fola Adeola will be honored.
- Emeritus Professorships: Awards to Professors Babajide Alo and Olukayode Amund.
- January 17:
- Long Service Awards at Tolu Odugbemi Hall.
- A Convocation Play titled Langbodo by Wale Ogunyemi at 4:00 pm at the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium.
Additional Festivities
On January 19, the celebrations will conclude with a Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel of Christ Our Light, UNILAG, Akoka.
