UNILAG Announces Exciting Line-Up for 55th Convocation Ceremonies: Key Events and Guidelines for Graduates
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is set to hold its highly anticipated 55th Convocation Ceremonies from January 13 to January 17, 2025. The event promises to celebrate the accomplishments of thousands of students across various academic programs, with numerous activities planned to mark the milestone.
Highlights of the Convocation Week
Pre-Convocation Press Conference
Ahead of the main event, a pre-convocation press conference will take place on Wednesday, January 8, to officially kick off the celebrations.
Key Events by Date:
- January 13 (Monday):
- Exhibitions Open: The Senate Car Park near the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium will host exhibitions from 9:00 a.m.
- Project Commissioning: Renowned Nigerian lawyer Chief Wole Olanipekun will commission three major projects:
- Centre for Herbal Medicine and Drug Recovery
- 120-bed extension at Moremi Hall
- Ultra-modern Learning Commons at the Main Library
- Convocation Lecture: Dr. Tayo Aduloju will deliver a lecture on “Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation,” chaired by former Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola.
- Groundbreaking Ceremony: A new building for the School of Postgraduate Studies will also be launched.

- First Degrees and Awards Ceremony:
- Morning Session: Faculties of Education and Social Sciences
- Afternoon Session: Faculties of Arts, Environmental Sciences, and Science
- January 15 (Wednesday):
- Award Ceremonies:
- Morning Session: Faculties of Engineering, Law, and Management Sciences
- Afternoon Session: Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Pharmacy, and Distance Learning Institute
- January 16 (Thursday):
- Postgraduate Degrees and Honorary Doctorates:
- Awards for postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees, and Ph.D. degrees, including best Ph.D. thesis prizes.
- Honorary Doctorates will be awarded to:
- Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
- Mr. Kola Adesina
- Mr. Fola Adeola
- Gold Medal: Professor Victor Ariole will receive the prestigious Gold Medal Award.
- Professors Emeriti: Professors Babajide Alo and Olukayode Amund will also be recognized.
- January 17 (Friday):
- Long Service Award Ceremony: Held at Tolu Odugbemi Hall.
- Convocation Play: A performance of Langbodo, written by Wale Ogunyemi, at 4:00 p.m.
- January 19 (Sunday):
- Thanksgiving Service: A final service will be held at the Chapel of Christ Our Light at UNILAG, Akoka.
Important Information for Graduating Students
Graduating students must adhere to the following guidelines to ensure a smooth convocation process:
- Collection of Academic Outfits and Order of Proceedings:
Students should collect their gowns and event schedules from their faculties or centers. Specific contact emails for each faculty are provided. - Seat Reservation:
Seating for the opening days (January 13-14) requires mandatory reservation via the UNILAG Convocation Access Portal. Access passes should be printed on January 9 (for Day 1) and January 10 (for Day 2). No entry will be allowed after 8:30 a.m. for morning sessions and 12:30 p.m. for afternoon sessions. - Return of Gowns:
All gowns must be returned by February 3, 2025, to avoid a fine of ₦40,000. - Certificate Collection:
Certificates will be available for collection immediately after the convocation. Late collection attracts penalties:
- ₦10,000 for the first year
- ₦5,000 for each additional year
- Alumni Registration Fee:
Graduating students are required to pay the following fees:
- First Degree: ₦5,000
- Postgraduate Degree: ₦7,500
Payment can be made to designated bank accounts, including UBA, WEMA Bank, ECO Bank, Access Bank, and GTBank.
