UNIBEN Clears Air on 2025/2026 Admissions: No Student Will Be Denied Clearance If Requirements Are Met
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has moved to end growing concerns over admission clearance for the 2025/2026 academic session, assuring newly admitted students that no candidate will be denied clearance as long as minimum entry requirements are satisfied.
The assurance follows multiple reports from different parts of the university about clearance delays and outright stoppages affecting some students offered provisional admission for the new academic year.
Why UNIBEN Issued the Notice
According to the university’s management, the complaints center on challenges during verification and screening exercises, with some faculties allegedly enforcing directives that contradict official university policy.
“These issues slowed down or completely halted clearance in some units,” the university noted, prompting management to issue a clear and unified directive to all faculties involved in the admissions process.
Optometry Clearance Controversy Explained
One major flashpoint involved the Faculty of Optometry, where some students were reportedly denied clearance due to an alleged quota limitation imposed by a professional body.
UNIBEN Management firmly rejected this basis, stressing that:
- The university is answerable only to the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) on admissions matters.
- No professional body has the authority to block or invalidate clearance for students duly admitted by the university.
UNIBEN’s Official Position on Clearance
The university made its stance unequivocally clear:
Any student who has been duly offered provisional admission and meets the minimum entry requirements for the programme will be cleared.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Edoba B. Omoregie, SAN, alongside the University Management, emphasized that clearance can only fail if a candidate does not meet the minimum academic requirements for the course offered.
What Affected Students Should Do Now
UNIBEN has directed all affected students, including those in the Optometry programme, to:
- Return immediately to their respective faculties
- Report to their Clearance Officers
- Proceed with clearance without delay
The university assures students that clearance will be granted promptly once requirements are verified.
Strict Directive to Deans and Clearance Officers
In a strong internal message, UNIBEN Management instructed:
- All Deans and Clearance Officers to strictly comply with Management’s position
- Clearance decisions must be based solely on minimum entry requirements
- Any directive contrary to this position should be disregarded
Bottom Line
UNIBEN has drawn a firm line: admission equals clearance, provided academic requirements are met. For thousands of students preparing for the 2025/2026 session, the message is clear—your admission stands
