Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri After Buhari in Historic Move

In a landmark decision that is already stirring nationwide discussion, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri. The declaration was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on Thursday.

The decision, according to Tinubu, is a tribute to the leadership qualities, discipline, and public service of former President Muhammadu Buhari. “The incorruptible standard he represented will not be forgotten,” Tinubu emphasized.

Why Buhari?

Speaking in a composed and reflective tone, Tinubu described Buhari as a man of “restraint in power” and “resistance to political temptation.” He openly acknowledged that while Buhari wasn’t perfect, his values—decency, steadiness, and integrity—stand out in today’s political climate.

“He stood ramrod,” Tinubu said, referring to Buhari’s unwavering resolve even in the face of criticism or praise. “He remained firm when others bent, and humble when others boasted.”

A Nod to 2015 and a Peaceful Transition

Tinubu also reminisced about their shared political history, especially the pivotal 2015 general elections—Nigeria’s first truly peaceful transition of power. He praised Buhari’s calm, principled leadership style, describing him as someone who carried the weight of the presidency without seeking attention or applause.

More Than Symbolism: Why UNIMAID?

The choice of renaming the University of Maiduguri is especially symbolic. Located in Borno State, a region long affected by insurgency, the institution represents resilience and hope. Under Buhari’s administration, the North-East received considerable attention in terms of security and rebuilding.

By tying Buhari’s name to this institution, Tinubu links his legacy to the region’s survival and progress.

National Reaction

The move has triggered diverse reactions across Nigeria. Government officials, civil society leaders, and everyday citizens have weighed in—some applauding Buhari’s anti-corruption legacy, others reflecting on his modest leadership style.

Social media is buzzing with debates, and tributes continue to pour in from across the political spectrum.

Tinubu’s Final Words

As the FEC meeting concluded, President Tinubu left the room in solemn silence after delivering this final message:
Like him or not, Buhari has left a mark. And with this new name, that mark is now carved into the landscape of one of the North’s key institutions.”
