The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2025 is now officially open! This prestigious contest invites young writers from all across the Commonwealth to share their stories. Whether you’re from a small island nation or a bustling city, this is your chance to make your voice heard and showcase your creativity.
Theme: “Our Commonwealth Journey”
The theme for this year’s competition, “Our Commonwealth Journey”, encourages you to explore the shared history and future of the Commonwealth. A unique group of 56 countries spanning five continents and over 2.7 billion people, the Commonwealth is a global community full of diverse stories, places, and cultures. What journey inspires you? Whether it’s a place, a person, or a time, your writing could capture the spirit of our shared journey.
How to Enter: Senior and Junior Categories
The competition is divided into two categories to ensure that everyone has a fair shot. Both categories allow participants to select from a range of thought-provoking topics:
Senior Category
For writers born between 23 May 2006 and 23 May 2011
- Word Limit: 1,500 words
- Topics to choose from:
- Imagine a Commonwealth where everyone has equal access to education.
- Retell a famous folklore from your country or another in a fresh way.
- Write about a book that took you on a journey and how it changed your life.
- Tell the life story of a plant that grows in the heart of your town or village.
Junior Category
For writers born on or after 23 May 2011
- Word Limit: 750 words
- Topics to choose from:
- Share a story of a time you learned something new about a Commonwealth country.
- Write about a sea trip from one country to a small island nation. What do you see? Who do you meet?
- You find a secret door into your favorite book. What happens inside?
- Imagine animals from different countries gathering for a big meeting. What do they say?
Prizes and Recognition
Winners in both categories will receive exciting rewards, including:
- A Free Trip to London: Two winners from each group will enjoy an all-expenses-paid trip to London. The week-long adventure will mix fun, learning, and culture, culminating in a grand event at a Royal Palace.
- Certificates and Awards: All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation, and some will be recognized with Gold, Silver, or Bronze Awards for their outstanding writing.
Eligibility
To participate, you must live in a Commonwealth country or territory. This includes places like Hong Kong, Ireland, and Zimbabwe.
