Presidential Committee Launches ₦10m Tax Reform Challenge for Nigerian Students

In an effort to empower young Nigerians and promote fiscal literacy, the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee has announced the Tax Reform Challenge — a nationwide competition inviting undergraduates and recent graduates to share their insights, creativity, and understanding of Nigeria’s evolving tax laws.

The initiative aims to spark informed discussions on fiscal responsibility, public accountability, and the role of taxation in national development.


Purpose of the Challenge

The Tax Reform Challenge seeks to:

  • Raise awareness and deepen understanding of tax policies among Nigerian youth.
  • Encourage factual, open analysis of taxation and fiscal reforms.
  • Build a community of student ambassadors driving positive engagement on tax matters.
  • Emphasize that taxation is a shared civic duty between citizens and government.

Who Can Apply

The competition is open to:

  • Undergraduates in Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
  • Graduates currently serving or awaiting NYSC mobilization.

Participants may apply individually or through recognized student groups such as tax clubs, student associations in economics, accounting, or journalism.

Entry Guidelines

Entries can be submitted in English, Pidgin, Hausa, Igbo, or Yoruba, and must include English translations for local-language works. Accepted formats include articles, videos, podcasts, radio shows, or social media content, all centered on Nigeria’s tax reforms.

  • Video or audio submissions must not exceed 10 minutes.
  • All entries must be factual, engaging, and educational.
  • Constructive criticism of the reforms is encouraged.
  • Submission window: July 1 – December 31, 2025.

Evaluation Criteria

Submissions will be judged based on:

  1. Objectivity and Balance – Fair and accurate insights.
  2. Technical Accuracy – Correct interpretation of tax laws.
  3. Public Engagement – Creativity and clarity that resonate with audiences.
  4. Impact and Reach – Measured through engagement metrics like views and shares.

Competition Format

Stage 1 – Screening:
All applicants will take an online test on key tax reform concepts. The top two performers (male and female) from each institution will advance to the next round. Their submissions will also undergo review for accuracy and quality.

Stage 2 – Zonal Competitions:
Regional contests will be held where participants present before panels of academics, journalists, tax officials, and committee members. Winners from each zone will qualify for the national finals.

Stage 3 – National Finals:
Finalists will compete live on TV, radio, and digital platforms, before a panel of experts drawn from academia, policy, and the media.

Prizes and Recognition

  • ???? 3rd Prize: ₦2 million

Additionally, the top ten finalists per zone will receive tech gadgets, internships or job offers, and will be recognized as Tax Reform Youth Ambassadors.

Student clubs represented by finalists will also receive ₦2 million each to host tax education events on their campuses.
