NUC Approves Return of Management Courses at FUNAAB After Seven Years
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially approved the reintroduction of Management Degree Programmes at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB).
This development follows a successful Resource Assessment Visit conducted by the NUC to the institution, confirming its readiness to restart the programmes that were suspended seven years ago.
According to a statement signed by Mr. Olasunkanmi Olajide, Acting Head of the Directorate of Public Relations at FUNAAB, the approved degree programmes include:
- B.Sc. Accounting
- B.Sc. Banking and Finance
- B.Sc. Business Administration
- B.Sc. Economics
In addition, the NUC also granted approval for a new postgraduate programme — M.Sc. Agroecology.
Background: Why the Courses Were Suspended
The Management courses were withdrawn during the 2017/2018 academic session after a Federal Government directive halted management-related programmes in all agricultural universities across Nigeria.
To adapt to this policy shift, the university’s Senate in 2021 restructured its academic framework by renaming the College of Management Sciences (COLMAS) to the College of Entrepreneurial and Development Studies (COLENDS). This change reflected FUNAAB’s renewed focus on entrepreneurship and development-oriented education.
FUNAAB Set to Resume Admissions in 2025/2026
With the latest approval, FUNAAB is now set to resume admissions into these management programmes under COLENDS starting from the 2025/2026 Academic Session.
This marks a significant milestone in the university’s academic expansion, as it reopens opportunities for students to pursue management and economic studies within an agricultural-based institution.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Skill-Based Education
The reinstatement of these programmes aligns with Nigeria’s broader vision of promoting skill-based, entrepreneurial, and development-focused education. It also reinforces FUNAAB’s mission to produce graduates equipped to drive innovation, business growth, and national development.
“This approval reflects the university’s commitment to offering diverse academic opportunities that support the nation’s economic transformation,” Mr. Olajide stated.
Final Take
With this new approval from the NUC, FUNAAB is once again positioned as a hub for entrepreneurial learning and management innovation, bridging the gap between agriculture and business in Nigeria’s evolving educational landscape.
