NUC Approves Return of Key Academic Programmes at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture

Exciting news for students at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike! The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially approved the reinstatement of five important academic programmes in the College of Management Sciences.
Starting from the 2024/2025 academic session, these programmes will once again be available for students at the university, offering full-time courses at the university’s main campus.
What’s New?
The following degree programmes will now be reintroduced:
- B.Sc. Accounting
- B.Sc. Marketing
- B.Sc. Banking and Finance
- B.Sc. Business Administration
- B.Sc. Economics
Background: Why Were These Courses Removed?
In 2016, the Federal Government instructed Michael Okpara University of Agriculture to stop offering academic programmes that were not directly related to agriculture. As a result, the five management programmes were temporarily suspended.
However, the university argued that these courses are essential for supporting agriculture, as they teach vital skills like financial management, planning, and marketing that are necessary for farmers and agribusinesses.
What Changed?
After a thorough review by a team of experts, which included checks on the university’s staff and facilities, the NUC found that the university had met all the required standards for offering these courses again.
The approval was granted following a comprehensive review by the NUC Executive Secretary and communicated in a letter from Abubakar M. Girei, the Acting Director of Academic Planning.
Looking Ahead: What Does This Mean for Students?
Starting in the 2024/2025 academic year, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture will welcome students into these reinstated programmes. The courses will be taught full-time at the main campus, giving students the opportunity to pursue careers in fields that play a crucial role in supporting Nigeria’s agricultural industry.
