Nigeria Declares October 1, 2025 Public Holiday to Celebrate 65th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government has officially declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday in celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.


A Call for Unity and Patriotism

Extending warm greetings to Nigerians at home and abroad, Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to remain steadfast in unity and patriotism. He highlighted the nation’s resilience since its independence in 1960, noting that Nigeria’s strength lies in its people’s collective determination to build a better future.

“Nigeria has stood tall for 65 years, and it is our shared responsibility to protect and strengthen this legacy,” the minister said.

Supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also encouraged Nigerians to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he described as resting on three key pillars:

  • National rebirth
  • Economic growth
  • Shared prosperity

He expressed optimism that with collective effort, Nigeria will continue to progress in peace, development, and prosperity.

As Nigerians prepare for the Independence Day celebrations, the minister extended his best wishes for a memorable holiday.

“Sixty-five years is not just a milestone but a reminder of how far we have come as a nation, and how much further we can go together,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo noted.

The declaration of the public holiday sets the stage for nationwide festivities, reflection on Nigeria’s journey, and renewed commitment to building a stronger and more united country.
