NECO Begins 2025 BECE Registration — Everything JSS3 Students and Schools Must Know

8 months ago Chisom

Registration is now open for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), organized by the National Examinations Council (NECO). If you’re in JSS 3 or manage a junior secondary school, this guide breaks down all you need to know — in plain, simple terms.

What Is the BECE and Why It Matters

The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is a key national test for students in their final year of Junior Secondary School (JSS 3). It marks the official transition into Senior Secondary School (SS1). Think of it as the “graduation exam” from junior school — and it’s now more important than ever.

Unlike in the past, the BECE certificate replaces the old First School Leaving Certificate.

Who Can Register for BECE 2025?

Only school-based JSS 3 students are eligible.

  • Private candidates cannot register individually.
  • Schools inside or outside Nigeria may participate, but they must be approved.
  • Private schools must get clearance from their State Ministry of Education.

Key Dates to Remember

⏰ Tip: Don’t wait till the last minute. Late registration attracts extra fees.

2025 BECE Registration Fees (Per Pupil)

  • ₦10,875 – Standard Registration
  • ₦15,625 – For schools with fewer than 20 pupils (Unviable Centres)
  • ₦5,000 – Late Registration Fee (per pupil)
  • ₦3,750 – Re-sit Fee (per subject)
  • ₦2,000 – Per Copy of the NECO Syllabus

Note: Stamp duty and Remita processing fees will also apply. Payments are non-refundable.

What Makes a School “Viable”?

A minimum of 20 pupils must be registered for a school to host the exam independently.

  • Schools with less than 20 candidates must pay the unviable centre fee.
  • Registration must be handled only by the school, not individuals or cybercafés.

How to Register: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Access the NECO School Portal

  • Existing schools: Use your current login.
  • New schools: Request access using the school’s official email and phone number.
  • Don’t use personal or third-party emails.

2. Install the 2025 Registration App

  • Remove old versions.
  • Download the latest 2025 version from NECO BECE registration page.
  • Photos of pupils must be in school uniforms.
  • Fill out full details offline first, then upload after payment.

3. Registration is Complete Only After Payment and Upload

  • A registration number is issued only when data is uploaded and payment is confirmed.

NECO BECE Grading System

The BECE result is scored using five simple grades:

GradeMeaning
ADistinction
BUpper Credit
CLower Credit
PPass
FFail

Why You Should Buy the NECO BECE Syllabus

Each syllabus costs ₦2,000, and every school must keep at least four copies.

It’s your roadmap to success in the exams — don’t go in blind.

⚠️ Important Instructions for Schools

  • Avoid duplicate entries — one pupil = one registration.
  • Passport photos can only be updated before the deadline.
  • All pupils must have a printed photocard.
  • Print and submit the validated list and RRR receipt before May 6.
  • Proof of CAS 3 upload must come from the school email.
