Lagos State University College of Medicine to Become University of Medicine and Health Sciences

In an exciting development for healthcare education in Nigeria, the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) is set to evolve into the University of Medicine and Health Sciences. This transformation was announced by Tolani Sule, the Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, during a recent stakeholders’ meeting.

A New Era for Medical Education

The Lagos State Executive Council has approved a draft law to establish this new university, which will soon be submitted to the Lagos State House of Assembly. This upgrade signifies a major step forward in enhancing medical education and training in the region.

Key Features of the University

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences will utilize several clinical training facilities throughout Lagos State, with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) serving as the primary site for clinical training. Future medical professionals will benefit from a comprehensive training network across the IBILE Administrative divisions.

A new main campus will be developed in Ketu-Ejirin, Epe, which will include administrative buildings and facilities for basic medical science programs.

Government Commitment to Healthcare Advancement

Professor Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, reassured the public of the government’s commitment to the project’s successful implementation. The new campus will be well-equipped to facilitate clinical training in both public and private hospitals across Lagos, aiming to significantly increase the number of trained medical professionals.

Support from LASUCOM Leadership

Professor Abiodun Adewuya, the Provost of LASUCOM, expressed enthusiasm for the transition and reiterated the college’s readiness to collaborate with the government. This initiative aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision of establishing a standalone medical university to enhance Lagos’ medical infrastructure.

Expected Impact on Healthcare

Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the new medical university aims to graduate approximately 1,500 doctors each year. This initiative not only seeks to improve healthcare training in Lagos but also aspires to set a benchmark for other states in Nigeria. By developing this specialized institution, the government hopes to bolster local healthcare and reduce the trend of medical professionals emigrating abroad.

Conclusion

The transformation of LASUCOM into the University of Medicine and Health Sciences represents a pivotal moment for healthcare education in Lagos. With strong government backing and a commitment to innovation, this new institution is poised to make a significant impact on the future of medical training in Nigeria.
