JAMB Urges Nigerians to Verify Candidates’ UTME Performance Before Awarding Scholarships

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has called on Nigerians to exercise caution and verify claims of exceptional performance by candidates in the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) before granting scholarships. This advice comes amidst reports of some candidates falsely claiming to have achieved perfect scores in the examination.

In a statement released by JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, the board emphasized the importance of due diligence in the scholarship awarding process. Prof. Oloyede stated, “While we commend the efforts of organizations and individuals who offer scholarships to deserving candidates, we strongly advise that they verify the authenticity of any claimed scores with JAMB before making such awards. This verification process is crucial to ensure that scholarships are awarded to truly meritorious candidates.”

JAMB has put in place a robust system for individuals and institutions to verify candidates’ UTME results. Interested parties can visit the board’s official website and utilize the result verification portal. By inputting a candidate’s registration number, the portal will display the candidate’s authentic UTME scores.

The board has also warned candidates against falsifying their UTME results, emphasizing that such actions constitute examination malpractice and will be met with severe consequences. JAMB has a stringent process of identifying and dealing with cases of examination misconduct, and any candidate found guilty risks having their results cancelled and being barred from taking the examination for a specified period.

Prof. Oloyede further stated, “JAMB is committed to maintaining the integrity of the UTME and ensuring that the examination remains a level playing field for all candidates. We will not tolerate any form of examination malpractice, and we urge candidates to embrace honesty and hard work in their academic pursuits.”

The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is a highly competitive assessment, with millions of candidates vying for limited admission slots in tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The examination tests candidates’ knowledge in various subjects and is used by institutions as a critical factor in their admission decisions.

Scholarships awarded based on UTME performance provide a valuable opportunity for high-achieving candidates to further their education and realize their academic dreams. By verifying claims of exceptional performance, scholarship providers can ensure that these opportunities are given to the most deserving candidates.
