IDG 2025 National Girls Essay Competition: How to Apply, Eligibility, Prizes, and Deadline
In celebration of the International Day of the Girl-Child 2025, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Girl-Youth Reform Initiative of Nigeria, has launched the National Girls Leadership Essay Competition 2025.
The initiative is designed to spotlight the voices, strength, and leadership potential of Nigerian girls, giving them a platform to tell their stories and inspire change.
Theme for IDG 2025 Essay Competition
This year’s theme is:
“The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.”
The theme calls on young girls to reflect on their personal experiences, highlighting how they take the lead in their homes, schools, and communities—especially during difficult times.

The competition is more than just writing—it’s about amplifying voices. It gives young girls the chance to share stories of resilience, small victories, and big dreams for a brighter Nigeria.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply, participants must:
- Be female citizens of Nigeria
- Be between the ages of 10 and 20
This age bracket ensures the spotlight stays on adolescent girls stepping into leadership roles at an early stage.
Prizes and Opportunities

- First Prize: Winner becomes Shadow Minister for Youth Development for one full day—an exclusive opportunity to experience leadership and governance firsthand.
