Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) in Enugu State is set to celebrate a historic achievement at its 12th convocation ceremony on Saturday, November 16, 2024. This year, the university will award first-class honours to an impressive 27 graduating students, marking the highest number in its history.

A Milestone for GOUNI
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke, announced that 546 students will graduate in total this year, with 27 of them receiving first-class degrees. This achievement underscores the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.

The announcement came after the completion of a thrilling 22-kilometre marathon race held as part of the convocation festivities, showcasing GOUNI’s commitment to not only academic success but also physical wellness and sportsmanship.

University’s Recent Milestones
Beyond academics, GOUNI has made significant strides in other areas of development:

  • Nursing School Launch: The university recently launched a nursing school, officially accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
  • Expanded Programmes: GOUNI now offers 83 programs, including 40 undergraduate and 43 postgraduate courses, expanding its educational offerings to meet growing student demand.
  • Healthcare Infrastructure: The university has completed an oxygen plant designed to supply essential medical oxygen to hospitals across the state.
  • DNA Learning Centre: In another groundbreaking achievement, GOUNI established Africa’s first DNA Learning Centre, setting the stage for advancements in biotechnology and research.

Advancements in Medicine and Sports
GOUNI continues to make strides in medicine, with its College of Medicine recently receiving accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. The university’s pioneer medical students are now in their third year and will sit for their second MBBS exams in March 2025. The medical school’s admission quota has also been increased to 75 students to accommodate growing interest in healthcare studies.

On the sports front, GOUNI is positioning itself as a hub for athletic development, with the completion of a new stadium designed to host both local and international sporting events.

Celebrating Sports Talent
As part of the convocation celebrations, GOUNI held a marathon to honour exceptional athletes. The male and female winners of the race each took home a prize of N500,000, while the first and second runners-up received N200,000 and N100,000, respectively.

With these accomplishments, GOUNI is solidifying its reputation as an institution committed to academic excellence, healthcare innovation, and sports development.
