FUWUKARI Gets Green Light to Admit Medical Students as MDCN Grants Accreditation
In a major development for Nigeria’s medical education sector, the Federal University Wukari (FUWUKARI) in Taraba State has received provisional pre-clinical accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to run its MBBS programme.
After years of preparation and waiting, this move finally opens the door for FUWUKARI to admit new students into its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme starting from the 2025/2026 academic session.
How It Happened: MDCN’s Official Visit and Approval
On July 3, 2025, a delegation from the MDCN visited the university to conduct a full assessment of its medical facilities and training standards. The outcome was positive. In a letter dated July 8, 2025, and signed by MDCN Registrar, Prof. Fatima Kyari, the council officially confirmed FUWUKARI’s approval.
The letter lifted the previous ban on new admissions and gave the university the green light to begin pre-clinical training for medical students.
What the Accreditation Covers
The approval specifically covers pre-clinical training, which is the foundational phase of the MBBS programme. However, the MDCN has requested the university to notify them ahead of any future Part I MBBS examinations, allowing the council to send observers and ensure quality standards are upheld.
Years of Hard Work Behind the Scenes
This wasn’t an overnight victory. FUWUKARI’s management, College of Medical Sciences, academic team, and technical staff have worked tirelessly to meet the strict criteria set by the MDCN. Their dedication has now paid off.
The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences expressed deep gratitude to the MDCN for its guidance and thanked all stakeholders who remained committed to achieving this milestone.
What This Means for Students and Nigeria’s Healthcare System
For prospective students—especially those who previously couldn’t apply—this is a golden opportunity. FUWUKARI’s new status as an accredited medical training institution is expected to attract a surge of applicants eager to study medicine locally.
More importantly, this move strengthens the health sector in Taraba State, the North-East region, and Nigeria at large by helping close the doctor-to-patient gap. Training more doctors locally means more hands on deck to serve communities in urgent need of healthcare professionals.
Looking Ahead: A Fresh Chapter Begins
With its MBBS programme officially approved, FUWUKARI is now ready to admit its next generation of future doctors. This marks a new chapter in the university’s growth and a proud moment for medical education in Nigeria.
For students dreaming of a career in medicine, FUWUKARI is now a top destination to consider for the 2025/2026 session.
