FUTA Set to Celebrate Over 6,500 Graduates in Combined 34th and 35th Convocation Ceremonies

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) is preparing to honor more than 6,500 graduates at its highly anticipated combined 34th and 35th convocation ceremonies, marking the completion of the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions. The event, which will take place on Friday, November 29, and Saturday, November 30, 2024, is a celebration of academic achievement, innovation, and future possibilities.

Celebrating Excellence: A Record Number of Graduates

Among the 6,500 graduates, an impressive 519 students will be recognized with first-class honors. Three valedictorians have emerged as the top graduates for both academic sessions:

  • 2022/2023 Best Graduating Students:
  • Ifeoluwa Faith Faromika (Electrical and Electronics Engineering)
  • Johnbull Anuoluwapo Vitowanu (Industrial and Production Engineering)
    Both achieved a remarkable CGPA of 4.96.
  • 2023/2024 Best Graduating Student:
  • Oluwasegun Joshua Ajakaye (Metallurgical and Materials Engineering)
    He earned an outstanding CGPA of 4.95.

The breakdown of the graduates includes:

  • First Class: 519 students
  • Second Class Upper: 3,408 students
  • Second Class Lower: 2,139 students
  • Third Class: 339 students

Additionally, 1,280 students will be awarded postgraduate degrees, with:

  • Postgraduate Diplomas: 344 students
  • Master’s Degrees: 756 students
  • Doctorate Degrees: 180 students

A Convocation Lecture on a Critical Topic

The convocation will feature an important lecture titled “Technological Innovations: A Panacea for Food Insecurity,” delivered by Honourable Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior. This thought-provoking lecture will take place on Friday, November 29, 2024, and is expected to address pressing global challenges.

Honoring Exceptional Contributions

FUTA will also confer honorary doctorate degrees to three distinguished individuals for their significant contributions to society and the university:

  • Professor Daniel Kolawole Olukoya: Doctor of Management Science (Honoris Causa)
  • Mr. Joel Ogunsola: Doctor of Information and Communication Technology (Honoris Causa)
  • Mr. Ayorinde Olurinde Ogunruku: Doctor of Management Science (Honoris Causa)

Furthermore, three professors will be awarded the title of Emeritus Professor, recognizing their outstanding academic contributions:

  • Professor Adebisi Balogun: Emeritus Professor of Fish Nutrition and Agricultural Biochemistry
  • Professor Akin Laseinde: Emeritus Professor of Animal Production and Health
  • Professor Labunmi Lajide: Emeritus Professor of Organic and Medical Chemistry

FUTA’s Global Recognition and Achievements

FUTA’s commitment to excellence in education continues to shine on the global stage. The university’s CanSat team, made up of students from the Faculty of Engineering, was the first African university team to participate in the American Astronautical Society’s space competition, ranking among the top five globally.

In addition, FUTA has received full accreditation for 18 of its programs by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2023. The university now boasts 59 programs with full accreditation, reaffirming its status as a leader in academic excellence.

Ensuring a Smooth and Safe Event

In preparation for the ceremonies, the university has put in place several measures to ensure the smooth and safe running of the event. According to Professor Eunice Adeparusi, Chairman of the Ceremonials Committee, security and traffic management personnel will be on hand to ensure the safety of all attendees and facilitate the flow of the event without disruption.
