Federal University Gashua Announces Vacancy for Vice-Chancellor Position Ahead of 2026

The Governing Council of the Federal University Gashua (FUGASHUA) has officially declared that the office of Vice-Chancellor will become vacant on February 11, 2026. In line with this, the university is inviting applications from qualified candidates both within and outside the institution.


About Federal University Gashua

Established in 2013, FUGASHUA is located in Gashua, Bade Local Government Area, Yobe State. The university was founded to expand access to higher education in Nigeria and has since grown to include five faculties and 36 undergraduate programmes.

It also boasts a School of Postgraduate Studies and three notable research centres:

  • The Centre for Irrigation and Desertification Studies
  • The Gum Arabic Research Centre
  • The Centre for Excellence

Over the years, the institution has positioned itself as a hub for academic growth and research development in northern Nigeria.

The Role of the Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the university, leading both the Senate and the Council. The officeholder oversees policy-making, academic discipline, administration, and represents the Chancellor in awarding degrees, diplomas, and certificates when necessary.

The position requires leadership, academic credibility, administrative skills, and sound judgment.

Who Can Apply

To qualify for the role, candidates must:

  • Be a professor with at least 10 years’ experience (as of February 2026).
  • Have 15 years of continuous service in a public university.
  • Held significant leadership roles such as Dean, Provost, Head of Department, or Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
  • Provide evidence of academic publications and research impact, including minimum h-index scores.
  • Submit a vision statement (max 1,000 words) outlining their 5-year plan for the university.
  • Be below 65 years old at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrate integrity, financial prudence, strong communication skills, and good health.
  • Show ability to attract grants, foster partnerships, and enhance staff and student welfare.

Tenure and Benefits

The Vice-Chancellor will serve a single, non-renewable five-year term. Salary and benefits are as approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Interested candidates must submit 30 copies of their signed and dated application with a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and photocopies of academic credentials. The CV should include:

The deadline is six weeks from the date of publication. Additionally, applicants must ensure that three referees forward confidential reports directly to the Registrar within the application period.

Next Steps

After screening, shortlisted candidates will appear before the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board for final consideration. Only applicants who strictly meet the outlined requirements will be invited.
