Federal University Dutse Appoints Prof. Ahmed Muhammed Gumel as 4th Substantive Vice-Chancellor
The Governing Council of the Federal University Dutse (FUD) has approved the appointment of Professor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel as the institution’s 4th substantive Vice-Chancellor, following a competitive and transparent selection process.
The decision was reached at an extraordinary meeting of the 4th Governing Council held on 13 December 2025. According to the Council, Professor Gumel’s appointment will take effect from 10 February 2026.
Rigorous Selection Process
Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Shuaibu Oba Abdulraheem, OFR, NPOM, said the appointment followed a careful and merit-based selection exercise.
He disclosed that 21 candidates were shortlisted and interviewed, after which Professor Gumel emerged as the most qualified and successful applicant.
Professor Abdulraheem congratulated the Vice-Chancellor-designate and offered prayers for wisdom, strength, and divine guidance as he prepares to lead the university.
Gumel Reacts: “A Call to Serve”
In his acceptance remarks, Professor Gumel expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for the opportunity to serve. He also thanked the Joint Selection Panel, the Governing Council, the Chairman of Council, and the current Vice-Chancellor for the confidence reposed in him.
He pledged to consolidate on the achievements of the present administration while working inclusively in the interest of staff, students, and the wider university community.
Who Is Professor Ahmed Muhammed Gumel?
Professor Gumel is a seasoned academic and administrator with strong international exposure. He is an alumnus of the University of Malaya, Malaysia, where he obtained:
- Master of Biotechnology (2009)
- PhD in Industrial Biotechnology (2013), specializing in Biocatalysis and Bioprocess Technology
- Postdoctoral Fellowship (2014) at the same institution
His PhD thesis earned a Distinction, underscoring his academic excellence.
In addition, he holds:

- A Diploma in Data Processing and Information Technology

He serves as a research consultant to AlphaSights, London, and has worked as a reviewer and editorial board member for multiple international journals. He has also attracted several research grants to the Federal University Dutse.
