Federal Polytechnic Ukana Gets NBTE Approval as Official Skill Training Centre
Akwa Ibom’s Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, has achieved a major milestone as the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) officially approves it to operate as a Skill Training Centre.
The approval, confirmed in a signed document dated August 13, 2025, marks a new chapter for the polytechnic, strengthening its role as a hub for practical and vocational education in Nigeria.
What This Means for Students
This is more than just a government endorsement. The polytechnic went through a rigorous process, including application reviews, quality checks, and a full NBTE verification exercise before receiving the green light.
With this approval, Federal Polytechnic Ukana can now run and certify vocational courses across 14 skill areas, including:
- Fashion Design
- Leather Work
- Paint Making
- Painting and Decoration
- Web Application Development
- Computer Hardware Maintenance and Repairs
- Mobile Phone Repairs and Maintenance
- Automobile Mechanic
- Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Repairs and Maintenance
- Welding and Fabrication
- Plumbing and Pipe Fitting
- Electrical Installation, Maintenance and Repairs
- Bricklaying, Block Laying and Concreting (Masonry)
- Carpentry and Joinery
From tailoring to technology, welding to web development, the approved list covers skills that directly empower young Nigerians with employable and income-generating opportunities.
Certification and Recognition
Training under this new arrangement goes beyond the classroom. After completing their programs, students will be assessed by a Sectoral Awarding Body, and their results will be forwarded to the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB).
Successful trainees will then receive nationally recognized certificates, making their skills credible anywhere in Nigeria and beyond.
Rector’s Reaction
Speaking on the achievement, Ambassador (Mrs) Eduma Enobong Essien, Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ukana, expressed pride and optimism.
She described the approval as “a clear sign of the institution’s commitment to raising graduates who are skilled both in the classroom and in the workshop.”
According to her, the initiative not only benefits students but also the wider community, creating a hub for technical knowledge, job creation, and youth empowerment.
