Akwa Ibom State College of Education Becomes University in 2026, Staff Told to Rise to New Standards

Akwa Ibom State College of Education has officially entered a new era, transitioning into Akwa Ibom State University of Education, with 2026 set as the defining year for full university operations. The announcement was made by the Acting Provost, Dr. Jeremiah Peter Iweh, in a New Year message to staff and the campus community, urging all employees to embrace higher academic, administrative, and service standards befitting a university.

A New Status, Not Just a New Name

In the message, Dr. Iweh thanked God for guidance and protection throughout 2025 and made it clear that the institution’s elevation goes far beyond a name change. According to him, the move from a college to a university demands a fundamental shift in mindset, work culture, and institutional standards.

“This transition must be reflected in our academic culture, service delivery, and administrative processes,” the Acting Provost stressed, warning against treating the upgrade as a cosmetic rebranding.

What University Status Means

Dr. Iweh outlined fresh expectations for all staff categories, noting that the new university must meet recognized national and global higher education standards while contributing to Akwa Ibom State’s social, economic, and human capital development in line with the ARISE Agenda.

He said the confidence placed in the institution by the state government must be justified through:

  • Strong teaching and learning systems
  • Relevant and impactful research output
  • Sound administration and transparent resource management

A central message stood out: a university is defined by its culture and quality of service, not by title alone. Early decisions taken now, he warned, will determine the institution’s credibility for years to come.

From College Culture to University Mindset

The Acting Provost called for a deliberate break from outdated practices associated with college operations. Staff were urged to adopt:

  • Strategic and forward-looking thinking
  • Innovation within established rules
  • Full compliance with regulations
  • Respect for due process

“The reputation of this university will be shaped by what we build today,” the message emphasized.

Special Charge to Academic Staff

Academic staff were described as the engine room of the university’s transformation. They were urged to:

  • Prepare thoroughly for teaching and strictly follow approved curricula and academic calendars
  • Align research and publications with priority areas of the ARISE agenda
  • Mentor students actively while modeling integrity, discipline, and professionalism

Dr. Iweh stressed that effective teaching and serious mentorship must remain visible, consistent, and student-centered, even amid growing workloads.

Expectations for Non-Teaching Staff

The message also highlighted the critical role of non-teaching staff across administration, finance, registry, library, ICT, health services, works, security, and student support.

They were urged to:

  • Perform duties with diligence and courtesy
  • Deliver services promptly and according to laid-down procedures
  • Respect university policies as systems are strengthened

Acknowledging that transitions often come with evolving processes, staff were encouraged to show patience, adaptability, teamwork, and cooperation to help build a modern university structure.

Unity, Dialogue, and Shared Responsibility

Dr. Iweh linked the institution’s success to unity of purpose and shared ownership of the university’s vision. While differing opinions are natural in academic environments, he advised that disagreements be handled through dialogue, consultation, and established channels.

Staff were encouraged to promote harmony, teamwork, and mutual understanding, using the New Year as a moment to recommit to service and national development.

Solemn Assembly and Thanksgiving Service

To mark the transition and the New Year, staff have been invited to a solemn assembly and Thanksgiving Service scheduled for Friday, January 9, 2026. The gathering is aimed at thanking God for past achievements and seeking divine guidance for the university’s goals in January 2026 and beyond.

Closing Note

The Acting Provost concluded by appreciating staff for their dedication and calling for sustained cooperation. He also extended warm New Year wishes to staff and their families, praying for a peaceful, productive, and fulfilling 2026.

Signed:
Dr. Jeremiah Peter Iweh
