In a landmark decision, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has officially appointed Prof. Adamu Ahmed as its new Vice-Chancellor. Meet Prof. Adamu Ahmed: A Visionary Leader
Prof. Adamu Ahmed, born on April 2, 1964, is a distinguished academic in the field of Urban and Regional Planning. A lecturer at ABU’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Prof. Ahmed has been with the university since 1991, rising through the ranks to become a professor in 2012.
He has held several important roles within ABU, including Director of the Directorate of University Advancement, and Coordinator of the Centre for Spatial Information Science (CSIS). His leadership extends beyond the university, as he currently serves as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council at the Federal University of Education in Kano.
A Wealth of Educational Qualifications
Prof. Ahmed is a well-rounded scholar, having earned his Bachelor’s degree in Geography (1985), Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning (1990), and PhD in Urban and Regional Planning (2000), all from ABU Zaria. Additionally, he furthered his expertise with an Advanced Certificate in Real Estate Development and Finance from the Urban Land Institute, Tampa, Florida, USA, in 2006.
A Career Defined by Excellence in Leadership and Service
Beyond his work at ABU, Prof. Ahmed has made significant contributions to government and international institutions. From 2019 to 2021, he served as Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Lands and Survey in Bauchi State. On the global stage, he has been the Coordinator/Director for the United Nations University Institute for Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) Regional Centre for Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development since 2013.
Pioneering Contributions to Research and Development
Prof. Ahmed has led several innovative initiatives at ABU, including curriculum reforms and the establishment of the Centre for Spatial Information Science (CSIS). Under his leadership, ABU secured international research grants, and in 2012, the university earned the title of Nigeria’s Best Planning School.
His collaborations with notable organizations such as Dangote Foundation, NNPC, and CCECC have led to significant advancements in research and education. Notably, he has also coordinated grant applications for World Bank’s Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE) programmes, which raised over $8 million in funding.
A Legacy of Professionalism and Recognition
Prof. Ahmed is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners and holds the prestigious NITP President’s Award for Meritorious Service (2010). He was also recognized with the Chinese Ambassador’s Award – October 1st Prize in 2019. His outstanding contributions to urban planning were further celebrated when ABU received the Town Planners Registration Council’s Best Planning School Award in 2012.
