Alvan Ikoku University Dismisses Fake Report on Admission Figures
The management of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE), Owerri, has strongly refuted a viral online report falsely claiming that the institution admitted only 942 students for the 2024/2025 academic session. The university described the report as “malicious,” “puerile,” and “fabricated.”
In an official statement released on November 9, 2025, the university’s Head of Public Relations, Mr. Nnaemeka Ijioma, denounced the publication by theglittersonline.com.ng, which was further circulated via Opera News, calling it “baseless and sensationalist.”
The Facts: 2,428 Students Officially Admitted
According to the statement, the authentic admission figure stands at 2,428 students, officially announced during the university’s first matriculation ceremony on Friday, April 4, 2025, held at the University Pavilion.
The ceremony, described as a historic milestone for the newly upgraded institution, was attended by thousands of students, parents, staff, dignitaries, and journalists.
During the event, the then Acting Vice-Chancellor revealed the detailed breakdown:
- 2,383 Bachelor’s degree students
- 45 Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) students
The university stressed that the claim of admitting just 942 students is false and misleading. A simple Google search, it added, confirms over ten credible sources—including The Nation Newspaper, the university’s official website (www.alvanikoku.edu.ng), and its verified Facebook page—that verify the correct admission figure.
Why the Claim Makes No Sense
AIFUE emphasized that all admissions were processed through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). This means that only JAMB and the university have direct access to the admission data—making the blogger’s figures implausible and unverifiable.
The university further noted that the publication’s attempt to link the false admission number to a supposed Federal Government policy and a potential TETFund funding loss was a deliberate act of misinformation designed to mislead the public.
A Growing Institution with Strong Academic Backbone
Formerly a college of education, Alvan Ikoku University has been training degree students since 1981 in affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Today, the institution boasts nearly 10,000 students, including those from its UNN-affiliated programs.
For the 2025/2026 academic session, AIFUE has already released two admission lists, enrolling nearly 2,000 students so far. Following JAMB’s extension of the national admission deadline for public universities from October 31 to November 17, 2025, the university announced it is finalizing its intake and encouraging qualified candidates to change their first-choice institution to AIFUE via the JAMB portal.
Available degree programs include:
- B.A., B.Ed., and B.Sc. degrees
across the Arts, Education, Sciences, and Technology faculties.
Prospective candidates are advised to visit the university’s official website — www.alvanikoku.edu.ng — for program details and updates.
Modern Facilities and Academic Excellence
The university highlighted its modern infrastructure, including:
- Well-trained and experienced lecturers
- Functional laboratories, workshops, and studios
- A top-rated library in Imo State with e-library access
- Four hostels currently undergoing major TETFund-funded rehabilitation
These developments, the management stated, reflect AIFUE’s commitment to academic quality and student welfare.
University Demands Retraction and Apology
In a firm tone, the institution demanded an immediate retraction of the offensive article by theglittersonline.com.ng and a public apology to restore the university’s reputation.
Failure to comply, the statement warned, would attract legal action.
The university urged the public, stakeholders, and prospective students to disregard the false report and rely solely on verified information published on its official channels.
