NECO Expands Global Reach with New Examination Centre in London

In a historic move set to benefit Nigerians abroad, the National Examinations Council (NECO) has opened a new examination centre in London, United Kingdom, marking a major milestone in its global education expansion drive.

The new centre, officially launched during the Education Matters Conference UK 2025, was unveiled by NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd.

According to Prof. Wushishi, the initiative aims to bridge educational gaps for Nigerian students and adult learners in the UK who have been unable to complete their secondary education or obtain equivalent qualifications.

“This project supports the Federal Government’s policy on inclusive education and global access to learning,” Wushishi said, emphasizing NECO’s role in providing credible and accessible assessments for Nigerians worldwide.

Global Expansion of NECO Examination Centres

With the London addition, NECO now operates in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, while new centres are awaiting accreditation in Egypt and Burkina Faso.

Prof. Wushishi described the London centre as a strategic step to extend NECO’s global footprint, adding that it would help Nigerians abroad gain educational recognition while reinforcing the credibility of NECO certificates.

He noted that NECO certificates are already accepted by several international universities, including Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University in the UK, as well as institutions in the United States, Canada, India, China, and Russia.

Strong Support from Nigeria’s Education Ministry and High Commission

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, lauded NECO’s expansion into the UK, describing it as “a practical move to ensure no Nigerian learner is left behind.”

He emphasized that the development aligns with the Ministry’s broader goal of engaging Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to the nation’s educational advancement.

Similarly, Dr. John Ibanga, Director of BEP Education and NECO’s UK partner, highlighted that the new centre would serve as an alternative academic pathway for Nigerian students in the UK—especially those facing challenges within the British education system or unable to access the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE).

“This new NECO SSCE centre gives both young learners and adults a recognised route for academic and vocational advancement,” Dr. Ibanga said.

Endorsement from the Nigerian High Commission in London

During his visit to the Nigerian High Commission in London, Prof. Wushishi briefed the Mission on the accreditation process and reaffirmed NECO’s commitment to expanding opportunities for Nigerians overseas.

Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, Head of Political Affairs at the Mission, praised the initiative as a “timely and strategic move that aligns with Nigeria’s vision for educational inclusivity.” He also reaffirmed the High Commission’s readiness to collaborate with NECO in promoting Nigeria’s educational objectives in the UK.

NECO Strengthens Education for Nigerians Abroad

The establishment of the London centre underscores NECO’s commitment to inclusive, quality education and its determination to support Nigerians in the diaspora.

By expanding its reach beyond Nigeria’s borders, NECO continues to solidify its reputation as a globally trusted examination body, creating equitable access to education for all Nigerians—regardless of location.
